Malteries Soufflet announced on March 14, 2023 an operation to expand its malt production capacity in the United Kingdom.
This concerns the site of Burton-upon-Trent (not far from Birmingham) in the county of Staffordshire in central England, well known historically for its brewing productions. The latter currently comprised two production units.
“To meet growing demand in the UK beer and whiskey markets, we have started to increase the capacity of a production line. This project consists of the addition of two germination tanks and the transformation of two germination tanks per oven into a cross-flow oven. Launched in June 2022, it should be completed in July 2024,” said the French company.
As a result, the site’s production capacity will be increased by 20,000 tonnes, giving an overall capacity of 148,000 tonnes of malt per year.
“The extension also helps us reduce our environmental impact thanks to heat recovery technology to save energy,” added Malteries Soufflet.
This expansion follows the installation of the malting plant on British soil in 2015, via the acquisition of the Molson Coors UK site (also in Shobnall in Staffordshire). The original agreement also included a long-term malt supply contract between the two parties.
