Heineken signs renewables PPA in Brazil with Omega Energia

September 2 (Renewables Now) – Dutch brewer Heineken NV (AMS:HEIA) has signed a ten-year renewable power purchase agreement (PPA) in Brazil with local energy company Omega Energia.
Heineken is purchasing renewable power from projects that will be implemented in the Northeast region of the country by the group’s project development unit Omega Desenvolvimento.
Neither the value of the deal nor the exact amount of energy to be supplied were disclosed.
The contracted power will meet 100% of the needs of 13 breweries and nine distribution centres spread across Brazil. Under the PPA, the Dutch brewer will also buy International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) from the future energy parks.
Heineken is committed to becoming carbon neutral in its own production in Brazil by 2023, seven years ahead of the company’s global target. In addition, the company is also targetting to neutralise its carbon footprint across the entire value chain by 2040, said Ornella Vilardo, Heineken’s sustainability manager.
